Welcome to BASS 2010

We are just two weeks away from the start of what I hope will be a fulfilling and enjoyable Summer School. We have just over 20 students and tutors coming from Europe and the United States.
This year we will be studying some of the Doctrine of the Lord, the Lords Prayer and two of the sacred languages. By the end of summer school we could well be writing the letters of the Hebrew Alphabet and able to read some short passages from the Old Testament. We will also be having a couple of sessions on how Swedenborg used Latin in writing the Writings.
The Swedenborg Society of London have just produced a new modern film to introduce Swedenborg and Steve McNeilly will be visiting to show us this as part of the Societys 200th anniversary.
There are other classes and talks to enjoy as well.
This year we will also be having tutor sessions when you will be in a small group with a tutor. This will be a good opportunity to ask questions and discuss issues. It will also involve you in some group work which will lead up to a short presentation on the last Friday when we are hoping for some innovative and different ways of presenting from you.
On Friday night your group might also put on a comedy sketch for the last night social, you could start thinking of ideas now!
If you have a special interest or expertise which you would like a short session in which to present or teach others let me know and think about what you could offer now. It might, for example, be scientific, arts based, sport or language. It would be really good if you were able to share something with everybody. If you begin planning beforehand the staff and other students can give you any help you might need to actually do it when you are at BASS.
There will be plenty of sports, games and social activities as well as opportunities to visit local places of interest and also shop! One good evening is a poetry prom so you could look out for a favourite poem to bring with you.
If you have not been to Purley Chase before it is an excellent place to stay. The accommodation and facilities are to a high standard, the food is brilliant and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. On Saturday night we have a banquet so do bring something suitable to wear.
I am looking forward to welcoming you to Summer School. Working together we can all enjoy an enjoyable two weeks at Purley in which we deepen our relationship with the Lord as we learn more about His New Church.
Sincerely Alan Lewin
